9 Things To Do Nearby When Visiting Black Canyon With Kids

While the scenery in and around Black Canyon National Park is spectacular, the park is small and many people wonder if it’s even worth a visit, especially if you have to drive out of your way to see it. However, there is plenty to do in the area, making this a great park to visit. Because it is located near a medium-sized town and on the edge of the Rocky Mountains, this area has plenty of both wilderness and modern amenities.

When you are visiting the Black Canyon area, be sure to leave time in your itinerary for some of these other nearby activities:

Visit the Morrow Point Dam

Morrow Point Dam is one of the three dams along the Gunnison River. The Marrow Point Dam is also one of the easiest of the three dams to access and view from the downstream side. The dam itself is impressive, but you can also access the Gunnison River here for fishing and hiking.

There is a picnic area and informational signs near the parking lot. To take the Mesa Creek trail, cross the river on a footbridge and hike along the northern rim of the canyon. Make sure to stop by the narrow gauge train displays to see a restored steam engine and cares.

The canyon at the foot of Marrow Point Dam provides plenty of places to explore.

Fish Gold-Medal Waters

Much of the Gunnison River is designated as gold-medal water. This means the river consistently produces high-quality fish and maintains healthy habitat for fish long-term. These designations come with extra restrictions for fishing in many places, so if you are planning to fish here, make sure you understand the rules and regulations. If you don’t have fishing gear with you, consider renting a rod and tackle at one of the marinas. In Colorado, kids under 16 can fish for free.

Fishing is a favorite sport in Colorado, and kids can fish without a liscence.

Visit the Ute Indian Museum (Montrose)

In nearby Montrose, the Ute Indian Museum is a great place to learn more about the local native history. The museum will help you see how the Native Americans in this area used to live, and learn more about their culture, both in the past and now. The museum also has outdoor exhibits including large teepees, the graves of a famous Ute chief and his wife, and a few short hikes. Our kids’ favorite part of the museum is the outdoor displays, so even if you choose not to visit the museum itself it’s worth a stop to visit the park and short trail.

You can explore teepees and learn about Native American life at the Ute Indian Museum.

Visit the Museum of the Mountain West

The Museum of the Mountain West is a private collection of artifacts and buildings which have been arranged to resemble an old-fashioned town. With over 20 historic buildings and an indoor “main street”, this museum is not only educational but it is also fun. You and your kids will be able to get a real feel for life in the West during this time period. Plan on spending several hours to half a day here. Located on the East side of Montrose, near the road that heads up the mountain toward Black Canyon.

Spend Time in Curecanti National Recreation Area

Nearby Curecanti National Recreation area contains the land surrounding much of Blue Mesa Reservoir as well as Marrow Point Reservoir and Crystal Reservoir. There are many activities that can be done here, from fishing, hiking, and camping to renting boats and taking a boat tour. Much of the area can be accessed without paying a fee, with the exception of boat inspection fees and camping fees.

Here are some things to consider doing in Curecanti:

Steep canyon walls rise on either side of the Gunnison River.
The views of Blue Mesa Reservoir are dramatic as the light shifts across the landscape.

Visit a Brewery

There are many breweries located near Montrose, and many of these breweries also have restaurants with delicious, locally-sourced, and unique menus as well as craft beer. No visit to Colorado would be complete without a taste of one of the state’s local brews, or better yet, a brewery tour.

Go On a High-Altitude Hike

Black Canyon National Park is located about 8000 feet above sea level. However, there are areas nearby that are higher. When you move to a higher elevation you will encounter different species of plants and animals. Visit a nearby higher elevation area for a hike through alpine plants and for a chance to spot rare animals like pika. Consider a hike in Gunnison National Forest, the Uncompagre National Forest, (pronounced Un-come-PAH-gray), or a nearby wilderness area. Remember to take appropriate safety measures anytime you are going out into a remote area.

Here are some suggestions:

There are many places to see the high-altitude areas of Colorado. West Fork Trail near Silverjack Reservoir.
The ski lift at Crested Butte provides amazing views for summer visitors.

Take a Ride on a Ski Lift

Less than 2 hours from the national park, Crested Butte is one of Colorado’s most beloved ski towns. Crested Butte is a unique combination of small-town feel and resort attractions, with a hippy, mountain-biking vibe in the summer. You won’t experience a yuppy attitude here, but you might encounter young hippies living the van life.

At the Crested Butte Mountain Resort, you can rent bikes and get a lift to the top of the mountain on the ski lift, or simply ride to the top for the views.

There are also plenty of nearby hiking trails and places to explore public land. This part of the state is stunning and worth a visit for the natural scenery alone.

There are other national park sites nearby that you can visit. Curecanti National Recreation Area was already mentioned. Other nearby NPS sites include:

The stunning views and wonderful ruins of Mesa Verde National Park make this one of my favorite parks.
